Multiscale entropy analysis of unattended oximetric recordings to assist in the screening of paediatric sleep apnoea at home

Producción CientíficaUntreated paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) can severely affect the development and quality of life of children. In-hospital polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard for a definitive diagnosis though it is relatively unavailable and particularly intrusive. Nocturnal portable oximetry has emerged as a reliable technique for OSAS screening. Nevertheless, additional evidences are demanded. Our study is aimed at assessing the usefulness of multiscale entropy (MSE) to characterise oximetric recordings. We hypothesise that MSE could provide relevant information of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) dynamics in the detection of childhood OSAS. In order to achieve this goal, a dataset composed of unattended SpO2 recordings from 50 children showing clinical suspicion of OSAS was analysed. SpO2 was parameterised by means of MSE and conventional oximetric indices. An optimum feature subset composed of five MSE-derived features and four conventional clinical indices were obtained using automated bidirectional stepwise feature selection. Logistic regression (LR) was used for classification. Our optimum LR model reached 83.5% accuracy (84.5% sensitivity and 83.0% specificity). Our results suggest that MSE provides relevant information from oximetry that is complementary to conventional approaches. Therefore, MSE may be useful to improve the diagnostic ability of unattended oximetry as a simplified screening test for childhood OSAS.Sociedad Española de Neumología y Cirugía Torácica (SEPAR) project 153/2015Junta de Castilla y León (Consejería de Educación) y el Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER), projects (RTC-2015-3446-1) y (TEC2014-53196-R)Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) y FEDER, y el proyecto POCTEP 0378_AD_EEGWA_2_P de la Comisión Europea. Unprecedented magnetoresistance in Cd-substituted Tl2Mn2O7 pyrochlores

3 pages, 3 figures.Moderate pressure techniques (P = 20 kbar) have been used to prepare Tl2–xCdxMn2O7 (0x0.4) pyrochlore-like materials. The x = 0.2 compound has been characterized by neutron powder diffraction, magnetic, magnetotransport, and Hall measurements. This material is ferromagnetic below TC = 110 K. Both electrical resistance and magnetoresistance (MR) are enhanced with respect to stoichiometric Tl2Mn2O7, due to the drastic reduction in the number of carriers (electrons) induced by hole doping. MR(0.5 T) is higher than 106% at 120 K, and MR(9 T) is 30% at room temperature. We show that hole doped derivatives of Tl2Mn2O7 are promising candidates in which to search for large bulk magnetoresistance. The author are grateful for the financial support of CICyT (Project Nos. Escala ARC-INICO de Evaluación de la Autodeterminación: manual de aplicación y corrección

Theoretical modelling of quaternary GaInAsSb/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots

Trabajo presentado al "Quantum Dot", celebrado en Nottingham (UK) del 26 al 30 de Abril de 2010.InAs/GaAs quantum dots exposed to Sb after growth exhibit spectral changes. We study in the present paper an idealized nanostructure consisting of a homogeneous distribution of the quaternary GaInAsSb surrounded by a barrier of GaAs. We nd that the valence band o set is a critical parameter in modelling its electronic structure. Depending on this value, we predict a transition from type-I to type-II band alignment at a di erent Sb concentration. The addition of Sb to reduce the transition energy while keeping a type-I alignment is only of bene t at low Sb concentrationThis work was supported by the Spanish MICINN (projects TEC2008-06756-C03-01/02/TEC, CONSOLIDER INGENIO 2010 CSD2006-0019 and CSD2009-00013), the Junta de Andalucía (PAI research groups TEP-120 and TIC-145; project P08-TEP-03516) and Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid S2009ESP-1503.Peer reviewe
